Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Thanamalwila Local council member R.A. Ranaweera and four others have been arrested and remanded in connection with the alleged rape of a 13-year-old mentally challenged girl, Daily Mirror Newspaper reports.
A senior police official has told Daily Mirror that suspects had allegedly raped the girl from Kiriwewa area at times for more than three months and that she was admitted to the Hambantota General Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Former MP Namal Rajapaksa also condemned the incident and assured that ongoing investigations will not be influenced by the political leadership.
