FR petitions challenging the dissolution of parliament to be considered by Supreme Court on 18th & 19th

07 FR petitions filed challenging the dissolution of parliament will be considered by Supreme Court on 18th & 19th May.

Several FR petitions had been filed seeking an order quashing the Extraordinary Gazette notification declaring the General Election on June 20.

Attorney-at-Law Charitha Gunaratne, the son of former Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne, Several political parties including Samagi Jana Balavegaya and several civil society activists including former Ravaya newspaper Editor Victor Ivan and Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu also had filed petitions.
The petitioners have cited Election Commission Chairman  Mahinda Deshapriya, its members President’s Counsel N.J. Abeysekara and Prof.S. Rathnajeevan H.Hoole, and the Attorney General as the respondents.
Attorney General has informed Supreme  Court that he is not in a position to appear for the Elections Commission & its members in a FR petition challenging the date of the election.
