The lawyer for Secretary to the President Dr P.B. Jayasundera tendered a letter from health authorities to a five judge bench of the Supreme Court today, implying that the parliamentary election could be held with certain precautions in place.

President’s Counsel Romesh De Silva submitted the letter from DG Health Services Dr Anil Jaasinghe.

Dr Jaasinghe in his letter indicated that an election could be held inspite of the covid19 situation with certain precautions and once regulations are made under the country’s quarantine law.

During his submissions, Counsel for the Secretary to the President also criticized the Election Commission for putting a stop to the Rs 5000 relief distribution by the Government.

The submissions were made when 8 Fundamental Rights petitions relating to the reconvening of Parliament were taken up for hearing for the fifth day at the Supreme Court.

The Attorney General who has been cited as a respondent in all the petitions is currently making submissions in court.

AG requested the Court to dismiss petitions challenging elections date without taking them up for hearing.
