Rare Black Leopard recently rescued from a snare in Nallathanniya, has died at the Udawalawa Wildlife Hospital today.

Leopard that was found ensnared in Nallatanniya Sri Pada forest Reserve was saved by wildlife conservation officials on the 26th, after it was tranquilized with the help of Veterinary Doctors who came to the site from Randenigala and Udawalawe Veterinary Hospitals.

This black leopard belongs to the species of Panthera Pardus Kotiya – a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka. However, a black skinned Sri Lankan leopard is considered a rare sight, because the skin colour is a result of a genetic condition.

It was taken to Nallatanniya wildlife conservation office for further treatment and wildlife officials announced today that black leopard died due to the injuries sustained.
