The report on the inquiry conducted on the match-fixing allegations raised in connection to the 2011 cricket World Cup has been directed to the Attorney General for legal advice.and future course of action.

The Ministry of Sports said the report was handed over to the Attorney General today.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU)of the Ministry of Sports launched an investigation into the allegations which were raised in June by former Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage claiming that the 2011 cricket World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India was fixed.

The SIU recorded statements from Aluthgamage, Sri Lanka cricketing legends Aravinda de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara, and current cricketer Upul Tharanga.

Former Sri lanka Skipper Mahela Jayawardena was summoned to the SIU, but the Unit decided not to record a statement and concluded investigations on the matter clearing all cricketers from whom statements were recorded.

“The three statements recorded thus far show that there is no evidence to prove the 14- allegations raised by former Parliamentarian Mahindananda Aluthgamage. The International Cricket Council too has not responded with regard to the allegations. It has also not even commenced any investigations’, the Chief of the SIU said.

Following the conclusion of the investigations, former MP Harin Fernando pointed out that Mahindananda Aluthgamage faces a 3 year jail term under the Prevention of Offences Relations to Sports Act for false allegations.

Fernando highlighted that the Prevention of Offences Relations to Sports Act which was passed in 2019 may not be applicable to an incident reported in 2011, but can be implemented over false accusations made in 2020.

“Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s Mahindananda Aluthgamage after knowing he faces a 3 year jail term for false accusations under the 2019 Sports Act now claims it cannot be investigated under the Act”, he said. (Newswire)
