A youth has died after lightning had struck the mobile phone inside his pocket while being seated under a tree close to a paddy field in Buththala, Ada Derana reported.
The incident had occurred near the 6th km post in the Uva – Pelwatte area in Buththala yesterday (09).
The youth and his mom, who were engaged in farming, had taken cover under a teak tree due to sudden heavy showers.
Lightning had then struck the mobile phone inside the youth’s pocket, following which he had fallen to the ground, his family said.
He had died while being transported to the Wellawaya Base Hospital.
The deceased has been identified as a 25 year- old youth from the Uva- Pelwatte area in Buththala.
The body of the deceased has been placed at the Wellawaya Hospital, while the post mortem examination is to be conducted today.
The Department of Meteorology yesterday issued a warning on severe lightning in various parts of Sri Lanka.
The public were requested to remain vigilant in this regard. (Newswire)
