The details on the travel route received thus far from the COVID-19 inmate, who escaped from the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) yesterday, since his escape, are false, the Police said.

Police Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said preliminary investigations have revealed that after his escape the patient had entered a house, changed his clothing, and had thereafter stolen a bicycle at the location and travelled to Colombo Fort.

Prior details obtained from the infected inmate on his route since escape have been ascertained as false.

A special investigation has been launched into the incident, with officials from the National Intelligence Unit to inspecting CCTV footage and interrogating other witnesses, he said.

The Police Spokesman said measures have been taken to disinfect the house from which the suspect had stolen clothes and a bicycle.

SSP Senaratne added that legal action will be taken under quarantine regulations against the COVID-19 infected inmate on charges of violation and irresponsible behaviour. (Newswire)
