Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva has assured that there is no fear of a community-spread from the inmate with COVID-19 who escaped from the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) yesterday.

He said preliminary investigations have revealed that the patient had walked from the IDH to Colombo Fort.

The suspect who had travelled in a three-wheeler from Fort to the Colombo National Hospital had been identified by Army intelligence Unit personnel at the site, who had taken measures to separate the infected patient from the public with the assistance of the hospital staff.

The driver of the three-wheeler in which the patient had travelled has been placed in quarantine.

The Commander of the Army said steps were taken to resend the infected inmate back to the Kandakadu Rehabilitation centre.

The inmate was resent to the Special treatment facility established in Kandakadu after obtaining medical approval and reports ascertaining that he was not critical due to the infection, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva added. (Newswire)
