Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C. D. Wickremeratne has called for a report from the North-Western Province (NWP) Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) with regard to the illegal motorcycle processions reported in the Puttalam district.

The Acting IGP has instructed the NWP DIG to report on whether the law was enforced on the candidate and supporters who were involved in the procession.

The order comes after the National Election Commission instructed the Police to take legal action against four illegal motorcycle processions that were reported in the Puttalam District.

Chairman of the Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said the order was issued after the Commission received four complaints in this regard.

An intense discussion was held with the Puttalam District Election Office after receiving many complaints on illegal motorcycle processions being conducted as part of election campaigns in the North-Western Province.

A request has been made to deploy the Police Special Task Force in Puttalam and intend to deploy the personnel in problematic areas in the district, he said.

Deshapriya further requested the public to inform the Police via hotline 1933 or the Election Commission on incidents of election violations or post a video of the incident on social media.

The Election Commission’s order was a result of video footage that emerged of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Puttalam district candidate Sanath Nishantha Perera engaging in a motorcycle procession using a high- performance motorcycle without a registered licence plate or a helmet for his election campaign.
