Rs 1597 million spent for official campaigning, which party spent the most ?

A candidate contesting the 05 August General Election from the Badulla district is reported to have distributed Rs. 5000 notes amounting to Rs. 20 million as part of his election campaign.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said that another candidate had spent Rs. 46.8 million over a period of 10 days which was observed by CMEV election monitors in Matara.

The candidate is said to have spent over Rs. 2.7 million to rent 103 busses at Rs. 15,000 per bus to transport supporters for a public rally organized in Matara which was attended by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The CMEV said it suspects that the President was unaware of the expense incurred to host the said political rally.

The election monitoring body further said that the political parties and candidates have so far have spend Rs 1597 million for campaigning.

CMEV says the the amount mentioned is only what they could identify officially and they believe that’s it’s only 25% to 30% of the total spending.
