The Government today recommenced the repatriation of Sri Lankans stranded overseas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was earlier temporarily halted.

Nearly 440 Sri Lankans from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are set to return today, while a special flight has been scheduled for Lebanon as well.

Additional Secretary to the President Admiral Jayanath Colombage said close to 18, 500 stranded Sri Lankans have been repatriated from nearly 93 countries so far.

The repatriation process was initially halted due to a COVID-19 outbreak at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Centre and was once again temporarily halted in view of the General Elections 2020 which was held on 05 August.

Admiral Colombage said the repatriation process will recommence from today and will focus mainly on Middle Eastern countries. (Newswire)
