Former Rugby Captain Namal Rajapaksa becomes Sri Lanka’s youngest Sports Minister

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Hambantota district MP Namal Rajapaksa has been appointed as the new Minister of Sports in Sri Lanka.

Namal Rajapaksa took oaths as Minister of Sports and Youth affairs before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today.

Thus he becomes the 18th in line to hold the Sports portfolio and is the youngest sports Minister at the age of 34.

A product of St Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia, Namal Rajapaksa has excelled in Rugby representing Sri Lanka and captaining the team.

Namal is a keen follower of Sports and has maintained good relationships with professional sportsmen around the country.

This is the first time Namal Rajapaksa is receiving a ministerial portfolio after entering the Parliament in 2010.

MP Namal Rajapaksa polled a record 166,000 votes from Hambantota to get elected to the 9th Parliament of Sri Lanka.
