Arjuna Ranatunga among 7 members nominated to UNP leadership

Former Sri Lanka Cricket captain and Minister Arjuna Ranatunga is among the 7 members nominated to the United National Party (UNP) leadership post.

The UNP Working Committee today reached an agreement to elect a new and young leader for the party during a discussion between current leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and members of the Committee.

Former UNP MPs Ravi Karunanayake, Daya Gamage, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and Vajira Abeygunawardana had shown interest in obtaining the UNP leadership when the matter was discussed on Monday.

The names of Arjuna Ranatunga, Navin Dissanayake and Ruwan Wijewardane were later included in the list of potential young leaders to replace Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Today a group of UNP Colombo candidates had written a letter to UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe requesting him to consider Arjuna Ranatunga, Navin Dissanayake and Ruwan Wijewardane for the leadership position. (Newswire)
