The Government is set to reopen the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for selected countries, the Daily Mirror reported.

Tourists from selected countries are to be initially allowed to visit Sri Lanka when the BIA reopens in September.

Countries worst affected by the Coronavirus, such as India and the US,  will be exempted from the initial list of cleared countries.

However, the Government has said it is unsure as to when the BIA will be reopened.

A meeting is scheduled for this week to discuss the reopening of the airport and the countries from which tourists are to be allowed to visit Sri Lanka.

Attention is also to be focussed on establishing an area close to the airport where tourists can stay for a period of 24- hours until they receive their PCR or COVID-19 test result. (Newswire)
