The inaugural session of Parliament will take place tomorrow (20) with the participation of 223 members of Parliament.

The Secretary-General of Parliament Dammika Dassanayake said two seats will be left vacant as the National Lists of the United National Party (UNP) and the Our People’s Power Party (OPPP) have not been gazetted as yet.

The UNP is yet to hand over its National List, while the OPPP is facing a crisis on the selection of the party member to be nominated.

Meanwhile, murder suspect Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan and murder convict Premalal Jayasekara have been permitted to attend the first sitting of Parliament.

The Batticaloa High Court yesterday granted permission for former LTTE fighter and leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP) Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan to attend Parliament.

Pillayan is currently in remand after being identified as the chief suspect in the murder of former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Joseph Pararajasingham.

The former LTTE fighter contested the just concluded General Election in the East on the TMVP ticket and secured a seat in Parliament.

Last week, the Secretary-General of Parliament Dammika Dassanayake said Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Ratnapura District candidate and murder convict Premalal Jayasekara, who was elected to Parliament following the General Elections will not face any legal issues when taking oaths as a Parliamentarian.

Dassanayake said that Jayasekara’s name has been included in the Gazette notification that was issued on Friday (07) by the National Election Commission on elected Parliamentarians.

Premalal Jayasekara is charged with murdering an individual when he along with his supporters had opened fire at a group of United National Party (UNP) supporters who were decorating a stage for a political rally to be held in Kahawatte for 2015 Presidential candidate Mathripala Sirisena.

Premalal Jayasekara has filed an appeal against his death sentence.(Newswire)
