12 tourism attractions to be developed in next 4 months, Tourism Minister reveals plan

The Government has prepared a short-term plan with the focus of reviving the tourism sector.

Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga said Rs. 167.64 million has been allocated for this purpose.

Under the project, tourist attractions in several parts of the country will be developed over the next four months.

12 tourist attractions identified in Kurunegala, Matale, Mannar, Kandy, Ampara, Badulla and Kegalle districts are to be developed at a cost of Rs. 18.96 million.

Special attention has been focused to develop communities driven tourism over the next four months.

Development projects have been launched in Mederipitiya, Heel Oya, Atonwala, Bomburu Ella and Heelogama villages for this purpose.

The action plan also sees the modernization of the Negombo, Kandy and Kalutara railway stations within the next four months at a cost of Rs. 14.50 million.

Minister Ranatunga further said the three old forts of Mannar, Kalpitiya and Batticaloa which are under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology will also be developed at a cost of Rs.24.40 million.

Meanwhile, Rs. 29 million has been allocated to provide training for young people interested in the tourism sector in the coming quarter. (Newswire)
