Millaniya residents requested to remain cautious of attacks by rabies infected foxes after man dies

Residents in Millaniya, Kaluthara have been requested to remain cautious of attacks by rabies infected foxes.

Addressing a media briefing, Director (Health) of the Department of Wildlife Conservation Dr. Tharaka Prasad requested the residents to refrain from sending children alone to schools and from walking alone on the roads, especially in the night to prevent the attacks.

“The first incident of rabies infection was reported on 06th June after a pack of dogs were bitten by a rabies-infected do. By 18th June, all domestic dogs in the area were vaccinated. On 26th June and 22nd July a Buffalo and a cow were found with severe symptoms and abnormal behaviour, and were later found dead,” Dr. Prasad said.

He further said that the first incident of a fox attack was reported on 28th July where a person was bitten by a fox and had reportedly died on 17th August.

Stating that foxes are usually active from the night before till 10.00 a.m. the following morning, Dr. Prasad requested the people to refrain from chasing the foxes and to instead inform the Department via its hotline 1992. (NewsWire)
