Updated : Russian contracts COVID in Matara, hotel staff members placed in quarantine

A Russian who was staying at a hotel in Polhena, Matara has been detected with COVID-19 following a PCR test conducted yesterday (23).

A 15- member Russian flight crew had arrived at the Mattala International Airport on September 13th and had undergone the mandatory quarantine process at the hotel in Matara.

Earlier, health authorities from the area had told reporters that the patient was from a tourist group from Russia.

The Russian crew, that was to leave for Russia today had undergone PCR tests at a private hospital in the Matara Town yesterday.

The test results had revealed that one crew member had contracted the coronavirus, while the remaining 14 from the group had not been infected.

According to Neth News, 04 Russians from the group had travelled to a supermarket in a three-wheeler yesterday.

The Public Health Inspector (PHI) in charge of the area said the infected Russian national has been admitted to the Hambantota Hospital, while 23 staff members of the hotel and their family members have been placed at the Habaraduwa quarantine centre.

The PHI officer further said information is being gathered on some staff members of the hotel who had returned home during this period. (NewsWire)
