The Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) has extended support to revive the Chinese language lessons provided by the Colombo University China Language Center together with the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC).

The latest collaboration will see Chinese language lessons provided to residents of the Hambantota district.

The language learning program was launched by the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce four years ago, with the goal of educating the Hambantota business community, especially the tourism sector, on Chinese language and culture.

According to the Daily Mirror, it was launched on the belief that locals learning Chinese would ensure ease of doing business, considering the number of China based projects in the district.

The first phase of the program was launched with technical assistance from the China-Sri Lanka Vocational Training Centre, and the support of the Chinese Embassy.

As the Training Centre faced closure, the Chamber reached out to the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) for assistance.
Under the new collaboration, HIPG has provided accommodation, food and transport.

Meanwhile the Colombo University has supplied two Chinese teachers Yi Yingzi and Ma Lijuan who joined the program in 2018.

Nearly, 150 participants have benefited from the one -year study program which has now been extended to HIPG employees as well. (NewsWire)
