Police ordered to commence criminal investigation into 1987 Aranthalawa massacre by LTTE

Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera has directed Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickremararatne to record a statement from the victim of the Aranthalawa Massacre in June 1987.

33 Buddhist monks and four civilians were massacred by the LTTE on 02 June 1987 in Ampara, an incident which was later known as the Aranthalawa massacre.

In June 2020, a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition was filed at the Supreme Court by Venerable Andaulpatha Buddhasara Thero who sustained critical injuries in the massacre.

Coordinating Secretary to the AG State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said apart from recording a statement from the victim, the AG has instructed the IGP to commence Criminal Investigations into the incident.

The AG has further ordered the IGP to submit a progress report within two weeks, Jayaratne added. (NewsWire)
