Sri Lanka will repatriate 44 Pakistani prisoners who were imprisoned in the country for various drug related offences.

The group is to be handed over to Pakistani officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake today (03).

The prisoners are being repatriated under an agreement signed between the two countries in 2004 to transfer offenders.

Under the agreement, the prisoners are to complete lengthy prison terms for drug offences in their own country, close to their families. Only prisoners whose terms have exceeded 06- months will be allowed to be transferred as per the agreement.

The decision to repatriate the 44 Pakistani prisoners was drawn during a meeting convened by Pakistan’s Interior Ministry. (NewsWire)
