Priest in Jaffna arrested for organizing event to commemorate LTTE

A 47-year-old priest attached to a Catholic seminary has been arrested for organizing a commemoration event for the LTTE in Jaffna.

The Police said the priest was arrested last evening after a group of Police officers had arrived at the seminary based on a tip off.

The priest is reported to have organized the event to commemorate late LTTE cadres and the group’s late leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The Police had found many items bearing the symbols and images of the LTTE and Prabhakaran at the seminary.

The Police said the priest had organized the event violating restraining orders issued by the Jaffna Court and courts in the North-East prohibiting such commemorative events.

The suspect, who is to be charged under the penal code on the violation of court orders and creating racial tensions, and will be produced before the Jaffna court today.

Meanwhile, four individuals were arrested yesterday (27) for promoting the LTTE on social media.

The Police said the suspects had glorified LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabakaran on Facebook. (NewsWire)
