The postmortem into the accidental death of a Dutch monk Venerable Olandaye Janavamsa Thera in Rathgama has suggested that it could be an act of suicide.

Chief Prelate of the Amarapura Sri Dharmarakshitha Sect Venerable Trikunamale Ananda Maha Thero said the postmortem was conducted at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital yesterday (10).

Though it was an open verdict, indications have revealed it is an act of suicide but the judicial procedures are still underway in order to accommodate ongoing police and other investigations, he said.

Venerable Trikunamale Ananda Maha Thero further requested local media to refrain from publishing news reports claiming the death of the monk from Netherlands is suspected to be a murder.

The monk was reported missing on Tuesday (08) afternoon and the Police had recovered his body from the Rathgama Lagoon later that same day.

Venerable Trikunamale Ananda Maha Thero said the funeral of the late monk will be held at Polgasduwa island hermitage today (11). (NewsWire)
