Cricket Chief Selector : Mahela denies social media reports

Former Sri Lanka Cricket captain Mahela Jayawardana today denied social media reports which claimed that he will head the Sri Lanka Cricket selection committee.

Speaking to NewsWire Mahela Jayawardana denied reports which said he will be taking up a role in cricket selection.

Mahela said that he will continue in his current role of National Sports Council Chairman to develop sports in the country.

Meanwhile according to Sports Ministry,  Sri Lanka Cricket has not yet sent their nomination to the post vacated by the resignation of Ashantha de Mel.

“Sri Lanka Cricket has to send a name to the  National selection committee, once they send the name, committe will approve it and will send it to Sports Minister for final ratification” Sports Ministry official told NewsWire.

Sri Lanka Cricket in a statement yesterday officially confirmed that Ashantha de Mel has resigned from his post of Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee.

According to cricket sources Either Pramodaya Wickramasinghe or Kapila Wijegunawardene is tipped to be appointed in de Mel’s place.

The present National Cricket Selection Committee, which was appointed on 4 December 2020 consists of following members

  • Chaminda Mendis
  • Pramodya Wickramasinghe
  • Ranjith Madurasinghe
  • Ms. Nilmini Gunarathne
  • Hemantha Devapriya
  • Uvais Karnain
