Over 100 Sri Lankans who were deported from Kuwait were detained by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department today.

According to the Daily Mirror, 112 Sri Lankans deported from Kuwait arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake today.

The Airport Duty Manager said the Foreign Ministry has been notified of the group that had arrived at 2.40 am via Jazeera Airlines.

An official from the Department of Immigration and Emigration said the detained Sri Lankans had been arrested by the Kuwait Police on charges of fleeing from their employers due to the coronavirus pandemic. They had thereafter been deported.

The group was detained by the Criminal Investigations Department upon arrival, while statements are being recorded from them.

Following the interrogation, they will be transferred to military-run quarantine centres. (NewsWire)
