A special operation has been conducted by the Police to monitor the use of face masks across the Western Province.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said officers in civil attire in 110 Police areas of the Western Province had randomly selected 100 people to conduct a survey.

The selected individuals had been educated on the need and use of the face mask due to the prevalent coronavirus pandemic.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the survey was conducted on a total of 16,803 people from the Western Province.

He said 1083 from among them were found to be without face masks in public places. Another 3000 from them were found to be not wearing face masks in a proper manner. Around 3500 people were found to have failed in following social distancing.

The Police Spokesman said the survey via the special operation found that nearly 5000 people had failed to follow the health guidelines in the Western Province.

DIG Ajith Rohana urged the public to cooperate and follow the health guidelines as the virus variant spreading in the country at present was highly transmissible. (NewsWire)
