Inter- province travel ban: Public allowed to attend funerals of immediate family members

June 22, 2021 at 10:13 AM

The public will be permitted to cross provincial borders on humanitarian grounds, such as attending the funeral of immediate family members.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the ban on inter-province travel is still in effect, despite the islandwide travel restriction being lifted yesterday.

Only members of institutions classified as essential services have been permitted to cross borders under the new health guidelines issued on COVID-19 in line with the lifting of travel restrictions.

However, DIG Ajith Rohana said the public can cross borders to attend the funeral of immediate family members, by providing valid documents at checkpoints or roadblocks.

The Police spokesman said vehicles will be inspected at the 14 entry/exit points of the Western Province to arrest those violating the inter-province travel ban.

DIG Ajith Rohana said 266 vehicles were turned away yesterday for attempting to cross the provincial borders in violation of the quarantine law. (NewsWire)
