A 32-year-old burglar has died after being assaulted by residents of a house in Wattala.
The Police said the suspect had broken into a house in Averiwatta Road in Wattala at 04.30 am.
Local media reported that upon being caught by the residents he had been beaten up with a cricket bat.
The Police said he had thereafter been admitted to the Ragama Hospital, where he had been pronounced dead upon admission.
Investigations launched by the Wattala Police have revealed that the suspect had been involved in 24 burglaries in the Kadawatha, Kiribathgoda, and Wattala areas.
The Police said the deceased has been identified as a resident of Kekirawa. The Magisterial inquest has been conducted, while a PCR test and a postmortem examination will be conducted today.
