SL Police to establish Special Unit to investigate incidents of ransom & robberies

The Sri Lanka Police is to establish a Special Unit to investigate incidents of ransom.

The Police said the Special Unit will focus on eradicating cases of ransom and robberies in Sri Lanka.

They added that a Special Intelligence Team will also be deployed to conduct surveillance on criminals involved in incidents of robberies and ransom. 

Meanwhile, a suspect has been arrested for assaulting a businessman in Hanwella for refusing to pay a ransom. 

The Police said the businessman had filed a complaint with the Hanwella Police in this regard on the 29th of June 2021.

The Western Province Crimes Division has arrested the chief suspect involved in the incident in the Godagama area in Athurugiriya, while in possession of a hand grenade. The Police said the suspect will be produced in court today.

Meanwhile, three other suspects who had also been involved in the incident have been identified. The Police said special Police teams have been deployed to apprehend them. (NewsWire)
