X-Press Pearl: More arrests, Communication data missing

Seven members attached to the local company representing cargo ship MV X-Press Pearl, which fell into distress off the coast of Colombo, have been arrested.

The Police said the suspects who were arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) will be produced before the courts today.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that the MV X-Press Pearl’s communications data has been erased due to a technical glitch in the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) database at the Colombo Port Naval Operations Room.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) informed the Colombo Additional Magistrate Lochana Abeywickrema in this regard yesterday.

The court was further informed that the Naval Operations Room of the Colombo Port had informed the CID that among the data recorded in the relevant VTMS database, the data for the period from 1st May to 10th June 2021 has been deleted.

The CID sought an order from the court to instruct the Government Analyst to inspect the relevant data recorder and submit a report on whether the data had been deleted, as the Port of Colombo states that this data has been deleted due to a technical error.

Considering the request made by the CID, the court directed the Government Analyst to conduct an investigation into the matter and submit a report to the court. (NewsWire)
