The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has warned that Sri Lanka is heading towards the fourth wave of the coronavirus.

President of the SLMA Dr. Padma Gunaratne told the media today that despite travel restrictions being imposed, it did not result in a significant reduction in Covid patients.

Covid infections were brought down to a containable level as expected by the authorities by implementing travel restrictions in May. However, this did not result in a significant reduction in infections, she pointed out.

Dr. Padma Gunaratne said the relaxing of travel restrictions determined the level of reduction in Covid patients during this period.

However, the SLMA is of the view that Sri Lanka is slowly inching towards the first stage of the fourth wave of the coronavirus, she further warned. (NewsWire)
