Former MP hands over 80kg blue sapphire cluster for sale

Another blue Sapphire cluster weighing 80kg has been handed over to the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.

The Authority has commenced the process to value the specimen which will reportedly be submitted for an international auction in November.

Former MP Earl Gunasekara owns the stone which was found nearly five years ago in Rakwana.

Speaking to News 1st Earl Gunasekara said the gemstone will be put up for auction in China and it was handed over to the Gem and Jewellery Authority.

‘This gemstone is worth approximately USD 50 Million,’ he told News 1st.

It was recently revealed that the world’s largest star sapphire cluster was also found in Ratnapura 08 months ago.

The star sapphire cluster was found by workmen digging a well in the backyard of a house in Ratnapura.

Called the “Serendipity Sapphire”, the stone weighs around 510 kilograms and has an estimated value of up to US$100 million in the international market. (NewsWire)
