Sri Lanka cricket legend Sanath Jayasuriya says it is essential to impose a punishment on the three Sri Lanka cricketers who breached the bio-bubble while on tour to England.

Speaking during a talk show, Jayasuriya said cricketers Kusal Mendis, Dhanushka Gunatilake, and Niroshan Dickwella must be reprimanded for their actions in Durham, England.

He added that however, if the trio feel the punishment is too severe, then they could appeal against the decision.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board yesterday banned all three players from all forms of international cricket for one year and from domestic cricket for six months.

“Wow … Must be more to this … it seems very very harsh …” Former England Captain Michael Vaughan tweeted about the ban.

“Banning players for a year, with a suspended sentence for another year, for breach of protocol is a big punishment. Was there more to what Mendis, Dickwella and Gunathilaka did? Or is this the new tough dispensation at #SLC?” International TV commentator Harsha Bhogle questioned about the ban. (NewsWire)
