Special Police teams have been deployed and more roadblocks have been set up to strictly monitor the provincial borders.
Police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said the inter-province travel ban is in effect in Sri Lanka due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus.
He said reports have been received of people travelling in buses to provincial borders and crossing over under the guise of pedestrians and thereafter using another bus to continue their journey.
People found to be travelling in such a manner will be arrested, while the bus driver and conductor of the bus he/ she is found in will also be arrested for violating the inter-province travel ban, the Police spokesman warned.
Stating that inter-province public transportation has been suspended, he said only essential services have been permitted to cross borders.
Special roadblocks have been set up while mobile Police teams have also been deployed in crossroads and near bridges to inspect vehicles travelling during this period.
Meanwhile, 479 people in 361 vehicles have been turned away for attempting to violate the inter-province travel ban yesterday.
SDIG Ajith Rohana said 2411 people in 1220 vehicles were inspected at the entry/exit points of the Western Province.
He urged the public to adhere to the travel ban, warning that people who violate the ban will be arrested while their vehicles will be taken into custody. (NewsWire)
