Mongolia- Fuel shortage causes long queues at gas stations

September 26, 2021 at 11:07 AM

Mongolia has run out of fuel leading drivers to form long queues on the roads. Fuel traders restrict the sale of AI-92 and AI-95 fuels, supplying it only to customers or contractors with their company cards, and with a limited amount of money. This shortage of fuel is because, for two months from August 2021, the fuel supplier did not supply the ordered fuel as planned due to delays in the maintenance of the plant by the Russian side. Fuel has also been ordered from Chinese factories, but supply has been severely delayed due to rail freight regulations.

Interview with (Kh. Khashbayar- Citizen):

“I have been standing here for 30 minutes. I have 56 cars in front of me. Cars with banks on the wrong side were lined up in the opposite direction, and the police were dispersing them to go to the other side. There are 70-80 cars here in Sod-Mongol gas station right now. Only membership cardholders will receive 30,000tugriks of gas. When I arrived yesterday, I was told that there was no AI 92 and no AI 95, so I left. Anyway, today I’m standing and trying to get gas. Some cars in the back are running out of gas. The brother behind me said that he had been queuing at Shunkhlai for an hour and could not get any gas.”

Interview with (B.Altantsetseg – Gas station staff):

“Even if I want to serve people with a card, it is not possible to do so because we have run out of gas. People don’t understand the attack and fight. We are also working. If we had gas, of course, we would sell. There is no way because there isn’t any gas left. There is a lot of frustration. People get angry, they get stressed. It is also difficult for those of us who are working.”

Interview with (Ts. Munkhjargal- Citizen)

“I went to two or three places. Petrovic and Sod-Mongol for example. They said that they will serve people with cards. It took almost three hours. I’m running out of gas. This government would have added it in June. It was added after the election. What is the price of bread now? The government doesn’t care about people. Both parties are no different. It is difficult to queue for so many hours not knowing if there is no petrol. It is difficult even for the police to regulate it. To get gas, the only way is to stop on a wrong way road. When I heard the news yesterday, if they add 200 MNT per liter, they will work without any problems. Price should be added.”
