The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has commended the release of former Minister and current Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen.

Issuing a statement, the IPU said it will closely monitor MP Rishad Bathiudeen’s trial.

MP Rishad Bathiudeen was arrested in April 2021 and was detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for several months over alleged links to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

He was thereafter continuously remanded under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

Later, a case was also filed against Bathiudeen over the death of a 16-year-old domestic maid who was employed at his Colombo residence.

However, when the two cases against him were taken up for hearing last week (14), the Fort Magistrate’s Court ordered that Bathiudeen be released on two sureties of Rs. 5 million each.

The court had also imposed a travel ban on the Parliamentarian and had confiscated his passport.

MP Bathiudeen was further instructed to report to the CID once in two weeks from the time of his release. (NewsWire)
