Scheduled power cuts will continue over the next few days until the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant is completely restored, the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union (CEBEU) said today.

Joint Secretary of the Union Dhammika Wimalaratne told NewsWire that it will require another few days to completely fix the breakdown that occurred at the power plant.

He said, as a result, power cuts have been scheduled for between ½ hour – 1 hour daily and will continue until the power plant is fully functional.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union has denied allegations that there was remote access to the protection relays in the power system in a bid to instigate the recent islandwide power outage.

Issuing a statement, the Union said investigations conducted by CEB Experts have revealed that an actual fault at the Biyagama Kothmale 220kV backbone transmission line had resulted in the islandwide power outage.

Denying allegations of sabotage, the CEBEU said the accusations have been made by a group called Senior Engineering Association (SEA) which has vested interests. (NewsWire)
