Out of the 330 books that had been borrowed by MPs from the Parliament library last year 122 are fiction, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today.

Addressing the Parliament today, the Speaker said according to the report provided by the Parliament library, 330 books were borrowed by the MPs in 2021.

Among the books, 122 are fiction, 94 are on Political Science, 27 are on Sociology, 11 are on Economics, 5 are on Science, 4 are on Law, 3 are Technology, and 1 each on Education and Sinhala Literature.

Expressing dismay over the books being used by the 225 Members of Parliament, the Speaker said that it was embarrassing.

Commenting on the lack of preparation for today’s adjournment debate by both the Government and Opposition MPs, the Speaker said it is a matter of serious concern.

He further chastised the MPs for wasting the important time allocated for debates to hurl insults at one another. (NewsWire)
