SriLankan Airlines has agreed to suspend the process to lease more aircraft for the national carrier, MP Harsha de Silva said today.

In a Twitter message, MP de Silva said the Board of the SriLankan Airlines was summoned to the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) in Parliament today.

The Board was summoned to inquire into the issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) to lease up to 21 aircraft.

MP Harsha de Silva said the Board had admitted they did not know the Sri Lanka economic crisis was this grave when the decision was made to lease new aircraft.

He further said the Srilankan Airlines Board has agreed to suspend the entire process.

“As a start, all timelines would be extended by 3 months,” the MP added.

The notice published by the SriLankan Airlines to lease 21 more new aircraft received severe backlash.

Many called out the Government and the national carrier for such a decision at a time when the country’s economic crisis was deteriorating. (NewsWire)
