President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has vowed to restore political stability through consensus in Sri Lanka.

His message comes a day after unrest broke out in the country as a result of his ruling party supporters attacking peaceful protesters in Colombo yesterday.

The attack has resulted in the public attacking several houses and vehicles belonging to Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) politicos.

The angry public has also attacked a senior Police officer to show their displeasure over the inaction of the Police during the attacks on anti-government protesters.

In his message on Twitter, the President called on the people to remain calm, and stop violence and acts of revenge against citizens, irrespective of political affiliations.

He vowed that all efforts will be made to restore political stability through consensus, within the constitutional mandate, and to resolve the economic crisis.

The public had been peacefully protesting for over two months calling on the President and his government to resign over the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Following the attacks on the peaceful anti-government protesters in Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa tendered his resignation from the post of Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

However, the incident triggered widespread unrest across the country, in which at least 07 people have been killed and over 200 have been injured. (NewsWire)
