PM position : Opposition Leader writes to President

Opposition leader MP Sajith Premadasa has expressed willingness to take up the post of Prime Minister under an interim government subject to conditions.

In a letter addressed to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the parliamentarian said he is ready to take up the post of Prime Minister after taking into consideration the President’s offer.

He further said several rounds of discussions were also held with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentary group on the matter.

MP Premadasa, however, said that he is willing to take up the post of Prime Minister in an interim government based on the following conditions.

The conditions are as follows:

  • The President must agree to step down from office within an agreed period of time
  • Implement the 19th Amendment to the Constitution with the support of all parties in Parliament within two weeks
  • Pass the 21st Amendment to the Constitution that was presented by the SJB within a short period of time
  • Hold a general election under the provisions of the Constitution to establish a proper government, after the livelihoods of the people are normalized and the rule of law has been established in the country
