Parliament correspondents of two local media institutions were allegedly harassed by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) parliamentarians today.

The Parliament correspondents were allegedly harassed by the ruling party MPs as they were videoing the SLPP parliamentary group meeting that took place this morning via their mobile phones.

SLPP MPs, including MP Indika Anuruddha, are accused of allegedly harassing the Parliament correspondents and snatching their phones too as they were leaving after the party meeting.

According to Lankadeepa, two MPs had attempted to assault the two journalists, blaming them, stating, “You’ll are the reason for everything”.

SLPP MPs Indika Anuruddha and D. Weerasingha were later seen snatching the mobile phones of the two journalists and handing them over to the Speaker in the Chamber.

Commenting on the matter, opposition leader MP Sajith Premadasa called on Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

He also urged the Speaker to instruct the parliamentarians to allow the practice of freedom of media and not to obstruct the duties of journalists.

Meanwhile, SLPP MPs said they were unaware that these individuals were journalists and questioned why they used mobile phones to film instead of professional cameras. (NewsWire)
