SL unrest: Over 800 arrested

The Sri Lanka Police has arrested nearly 883 persons in connection to the unrest that broke out in Sri Lanka on 09th May 2022.

The unrest erupted after Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) loyalists attacked anti-government protesters in Colombo, prompting the public to retaliate by torching the vehicles and houses of SLPP politicos and loyalists. 

The Police said following investigations launched into the attacks, a total of 883 persons have been arrested thus far, with 412 of them having been remanded and 364 having been released on bail. 

A total of 219 persons were arrested yesterday alone in connection to the incidents, out of which 57 had been remanded and 68 had been released on bail.

The Police further said that they have received 600 alerts via the hotlines that were set up for the public to provide information on those who had been involved in the Galle Face and Temple Trees attacks. 

They said the information provided by the public had more than 475 pictures of the attacks and 70 video clips.

The Police added that the information has been forwarded to the respective Police stations and special Police units including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to take necessary legal action. (NewsWire)
