Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has pointed out that the government’s proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution seeks to strengthen the powers of the President.

In a letter to Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe, who is appointed to draft the new 21st Amendment, MP Sajith Premadasa pointed out that the proposed draft does not intend to abolish the Executive Presidency.

He said the new draft by the government looks at enabling the President to hold ministerial portfolios, which was not envisaged in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

MP Sajith Premadasa said that the new draft of the 21st Amendment is contrary to the provisions in the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. (NewsWire)
