The Prime Minister’s Office has refuted media reports claiming that a decision has been made to increase the salaries of public sector employees.

Issuing a statement, the Office said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has not made any such decision.

The Prime Minister’s Office clarified that the upcoming interim budget will provide relief while reducing allocations to all Ministries, except for Health and Education.

The clarification comes after several media  reported that the salaries of public servants will be increased with immediate effect by the relief-oriented Budget to be presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The report said the Prime Minister has taken this decision to financially strengthen the public servants to face the spiraling Cost of Living.

The previous Yahapalana Government increased the salaries of public servants by Rs.10,000 in 2015, and an increase of double that amount is expected through the upcoming Budget. The Prime Minister has given the above instructions to Officials working on the new Budget proposals, the report added. (NewsWire)
