Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has called for an inquiry against Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam.

The Prime Minister called for the inquiry while speaking in Parliament today during the vote of condolence on the murder of former MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala.

Citing MP Shanakiyan’s speech on the unrest that broke out in Colombo on 09 May, the Prime Minister said the MP has endorsed the attacks on the properties of Parliamentarians by unruly mobs.

“The MP said houses were torched due to MPs voting in favour of the 20th Amendment and other policies that were against the country. He also urged all to keep in mind that their houses were attacked for betraying the people,” the Prime Minister said reading out excerpts of the MP’s speech.

Questioning how a member of Parliament could make such a statement, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also questioned if the MP was endorsing the torching of properties of Parliamentarians, as well the murder and assault of fellow MPs.

The Prime Minister said MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam must issue an apology and withdraw his statement prior to the end of the Parliament sessions next week.

In the event he fails to do so, then the Speaker has the power to debate the matter and put it before a committee for an inquiry and thereafter submit a report, Ranil Wickremesinghe added. (NewsWire)
