“The proposal is still to his advantage” Ranil speaks on 21A & President

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says he presumes that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa are in favour of the proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

“The President promised to support the constitutional reforms when the proposal was put forward. The proposal is still to his advantage and not to his disadvantage,” the Prime Minister pointed out.

Stating that earlier there were objections to the 21st Amendment from ruling party members, Ranil Wickremesinghe said that there were no major adverse reactions after the draft was submitted to the Cabinet.

“Before the draft was presented to the Cabinet, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam and former SLPP MP Basil Rajapaksa had met me. They had also met other parties. But the draft was later presented to the Cabinet on the same day,” Wickremesinghe said.

He said the Ministers had only requested more time to peruse the document as it had been submitted at the last moment when the Cabinet had convened and he has not received or heard of any major reactions to the draft as yet.

The Prime Minister also said he presumes that the draft of the proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution will be taken up for discussion by the Cabinet of Ministers today. (NewsWire)
