Ban on over 2000 CC vehicles on the road among 10 proposals by Gammanpila to save fuel

MP Udaya Gammanpila has presented a 10-point proposal on short-term solutions for the current fuel crisis in Sri Lanka.

The leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya presented the solutions to the President and Prime Minister during a media briefing held today.

Stating that the proposal had initially been presented to the Cabinet of Ministers in January, the MP said, however, the Cabinet had failed to implement it.

He further said that the proposal is centered around using fuel sparingly in all sectors.

Following are the key facts in the 10-point proposal.

  • A temporary ban on operating cars and jeeps with over 2000 CC engine which consumes more fuel.
  • Introduce a 4-day working week, or three-day working week with the remaining two days as work from home.
  • Digitalize all services of government offices to prevent the public from travelling to various government offices.
  • Transfer all state employees to offices close to their residences.
  • School academic activities to be conducted for three days per week, with the remaining two days being conducted via online classes.
  • Children unable to attend school to be provided the opportunity to attend the class via Zoom or online platforms.
  • All private organizations to conduct meetings via zoom or other online platforms.
  • Introduce flexy duty hours similar to other nations to reduce traffic congestion.
  • Introduce buses without seats for short-distance journeys.
