The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was in breach of duty by failing to provide adequate protection to peaceful protesters and to uphold the rule of law on 09th May 2022.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) loyalists attacked anti-government protesters near the Temple Trees and at the Galle Face protest campaign site following a meeting with then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Issuing a special statement on its inquiry into the incident, the HRCSL said that the President must direct an investigation into the breach of duty by the IGP in order to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The HRCSL has also recommended the President direct an investigation into all senior Police officers who had been deployed on duty at protest sites in Colombo for their failure to provide adequate protection to protesters. (NewsWire)
