Met Department issues severe weather advisory

Showery and windy conditions are likely to enhance in the southwest quarter of the island during the next few days from today with the strengthening of the Southwest Monsoon. 

The Met department said that the showery and windy conditions are likely to enhance in the western and southern sea areas as well during this period.

Thereby, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern, and NorthWestern provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. 

Heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places in aforesaid areas. 

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva province and in the Ampara district during the afternoon or night. 

Strong winds of about 50 kmph can be expected at times along the western slopes of the Central hills and in the western and Southern provinces. 

The public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, the people living in the low-lying areas of the Ratnapura district requested to be vigilant due to the inclement weather. 

They have been warned of flash floods due to the overflowing Rathganga in the Ratnapura district. (NewsWire)
